Why window treatments?

Although the considerations for windows are made based on the functional needs and aesthetic intent of buildings, many people participate in dressing up windows with window treatments. The cause of the window treatments in many areas were due to the lack of care in placement of the windows when builders were making a building.

For many window treatments, curtains and draperies are most often used to dress up the window. Although there are many different accessories and types of window treatments available, they all have the same basic features. For example, there isn’t really a distinction between a curtain and a drapery—many times, a drapery just necessitates a more elaborate treatment on the windows such as adding in linings, overdrapes, valances and tassels. With use of a curtain, many associates its use as a more lighter and direct approach of functionality, such as for correcting the amount of light in a room or for privacy.  In both uses of window treatments, the fabric chosen to cover the windows are also vital to how they each showcase a room, whether it be with a light material, which is more often used, or a heavier material. In some window treatments, where complete control or privacy is needed, window shades such as blinds and shutters, are used as they are heavier. Many times, however, blinds and shutters are bland and less decorative.

Beginning in the 1960s, designers have tried to simplify window treatments. Instead of very elaborate decorations and assortments of panels, draperies and valances, they have tried using more simple treatments such as curtains, blinds or shades. Window treatments are based very much on the functional needs of the window and its overall intent. For a window that’s designed in architectural terms to be for decorative imaging, more elaborate treatments are used. For a window designed to serve a function, less elaborate treatments are used. For up-playing and down-playing of a window, a window treatment would effectively serve both uses.
